Hull Overview
Hull is a port city located in East Yorkshire where the Humber Estuary meets the River Hull. The Humber bridge connects Hull to Barton with construction starting in 1972 and finished in1981 which now has over 120,000 vehicles travel over it every week. The bridge costs £1.50 for cars to cross which can be payed either at the toll both before crossing or online via the website which allows a 10% discount. A chain of docks was built in the Georgian times and some of them have now been renovated with shopping centres and a marina now being the current inhabitants. Princes Quay is a shopping centre that has been built in the water on stilts over the Prince’s dock which is where it acquired its name from. The old town was made with some interesting buildings and a medieval street plan. The Ferens Art Gallery opened in 1927 and was restored and extended in 1991, it hosts regular events here with guided tours and ever-changing exhibitions.
Things to do in Hull
The Deep is one of the UK’s biggest aquariums and a home to a whopping 3000 creatures from sharks to penguins and everything in between. Whilst you are at The Deep then head over to the two rivers restaurant inside the aquarium to feel like you are eating dinner with the exhibits. The restaurant is surrounded by a tank in which you are able to watch these beautiful creatures swimming around whilst you eat your food. The deep provides student discounts so make sure you book online before your visit to take advantage of the great prices and get ready to learn a lot about the creatures in the sea. The New theatre (City Hall) is a civic building that does not perform any administrative functions for the council but instead is used for concerts. With over 1800 seats the auditorium hosts a lot of events throughout the year from orchestras to theatre shows to lecture talks, this place can cater for all and is a must see if you are living in Hull.
Sport in Hull
Hull City football team play at the KCOM stadium which can host 25,586 fans all cheering on the almighty Hull city Tigers. The university of Hull are investing $16 million into building a new sports complex that will be complete with brand new pitches, 12-court sports facility, dance studio and much more. The Woodford leisure centre was recently refurbished and now boasts a 25m swimming pool and a learning pool for those of you who would like to learn how to swim.
Escape Hull
The vast amounts of green land make it a very interesting place to cycle, it Is also rather hilly which makes it tough but worth the views when you get there. During the summer head over to Kilnsea and enjoy the sandy beaches and the Spurn National Nature Reserve.
Transport in Hull
There are only two fast trains that travel to London, the other ones stop off at Doncaster. There are direct links to Sheffield, Manchester and Leeds. The M62 links Hull the rest of the motorway network that runs throughout the UK. The nearest airport is only 19 miles away.
