Dublin Overview
Dublin is a City that has so much to offer, it is a city that students flock to because it is such a vibrant and enthralling place to live. Dublin is the capital city of the Republic of Ireland with fantastically built historic buildings dating all the way back to the 13th century such as St Patrick’s Cathedral which is the tallest church in Ireland with a spire measuring 43 metres. Phoenix park which is home to Dublin zoo where you will find an array of animals from orangutans to tarantulas the zoo has it all. If you are interested in finding out more about the Irish heritage and culture then the National Museum of Ireland is the place to go, with free entry you can’t go wrong!
Things to do in Dublin
If there is one thing that you will learn very quickly when living in Dublin, it’s that people love to drink Guinness and if you would like to find out more about this famous drink then head over to the Guinness storehouse, where you can have a guided tour and finish it off with a perfectly poured Guinness whilst looking out over the city of Dublin in the new 360 viewing tower. If you prefer whiskey to Guinness then you are in the right city, Old Jameson Distillery which has a vast range of experiences that you and your friends can enjoy. You can have a class on blending the perfect whiskey and even make whiskey inspired cocktails.
Once you have had a drink or two at either one of these attractions, then you’ll be sure to head over to the Temple bar district which hosts a variety of things to whet your appetite. This district has everything from street performers, pubs, clubs’ restaurants and so much more. It has the highest density of pubs in the whole of Dublin so you wont struggle to find a place to a have a few drinks with your friends. Once the sun goes down the music is turned up and this lovely district becomes a festival of drink, music, food and street performers to keep you entertained throughout your night. No wonder thousands of students decide to study in Dublin!
If it is shopping you like then look no further, Dublin has several prominent shopping places which will cater to all budgets and tastes, you will find it hard not to find something you like. The local shopping centres Ilac and Jervis have all the shops from arts & crafts shops all the way to large department stores. If you are looking for something a little bit different, then make sure you visit the markets that are located around the city. The biggest market in Dublin is the Liberty market which you will find more or less everything with some great price tags attached for them students that want to spend as little as possible. The Temple Bar Book market is somewhere you can find a great book, you may even find some to help you with your studies. As there is so much to do in Dublin it can become very expensive very quickly, visit some of the green space in Dublin such as St. Stephen’s Green and Phoenix park which are just beautiful in the summer. Sanderman’s operates free tours of Dublin every day which makes it a cheap great day out with lots of learning about your new city, although the tour is free you are expected to tip the guide at the end if you were happy with the tour.
Nightlife in Dublin
Dublin has a wide range of pubs clubs and bars, meaning you will find somewhere to suit your mood whatever that may be. The Stag’s Head is a beautiful Victorian decorated pub with an actual stag’s head suspended above the bar, it is also very popular with tourists and students. Once you have had a few drinks in the bars surrounding Dublin then head over to the Button Factory to dance the night away to live DJ’s with free entry before 12.30am. If you like to have the option to party every night then go to The Workman’s Club which have club nights on Monday-Sunday.
Sport in Dublin
Dublin have a very unique sport scene; Gaelic football is a very well know sport in Ireland with Dublin GAA being Dublin’s Gaelic football team. Gaelic football was first played in 1884 and is still being played to this day. There are 6 sports centres in Dublin which means any students who like to stay fit and healthy whilst they are at university will have loads to choose from.
Escape Dublin
For those who will want to explore the surrounding area of Dublin will have a lot to chose from. Just outside of Dublin is Bull Island which boast scenic views with a lovely beach stretching to 5km in length and 800m in width, it isn’t the biggest beach, but it makes for a lovely day out by the sea. Wicklow Mountains are a 40-minute drive away and are the largest continuous upland area in Ireland, if you are an international student then this is the place to go to snap that perfect picture.
Transport in Dublin
Dublin is not the biggest city in the world, meaning travelling around the city is not that time consuming especially with the good transport links the city has to offer. DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transport) is the most common used transport when getting around in Dublin. Dublin also has trams which will get you to whichever attractions you would like to see and getting tickets to ride on the trams couldn’t be easier, there are street-side vending machines across the whole city which you can buy your tram ticket from. Dublin Airport is situated just outside Dublin and is roughly 20 minutes in a car from the city centre.
